Green Party Petitioning Starts March 10th

Green Party candidates and volunteers in the Pittsburgh area will start petitioning on March 10th to get on the ballot for the November election.

The campaigns of Mel Packer, Green candidate for the U.S. Senate, and Ed Bortz, Green candidate for Congress in the 14th District, are organizing petitioning workshops and trainings for volunteers.

The next petitioning volunteer workshop will be on
Friday, March 12th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hill House, 1835 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh 15219.

The Green Party candidates in 2010 will once again be the strongest voice for Peace Now...Bring Our Troops Home, Healthcare for Everyone, Funds for Education NOT Wall Street Bailouts, and Rebuild the Economy with Green Jobs, Sustainable Communities & Mass Transit.

SAVE BRADDOCK HOSPITAL...SAVE COMMUNITY HOSPITALS!

The announcement of a proposal for the Braddock Hospital site by the County Executive, Dan Onorato, is a direct result of the dedication, persistence, and unrelenting pressure exerted on University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and local political leaders by Braddock residents and other activists, including many Green Party members.

Yet the proposal put forth by the County Executive falls far short of the needs and demands of residents of Braddock and neighboring communities, ignores their right to quality health care, and surrenders to the profit-driven interests of UPMC.

Through the Save Our Hospital Coalition (SOCH), the people of these communities have demanded that the hospital remain open. Anything short of meeting this demand is a callous compromise. Any deal arrived at independently of their wishes is grossly undemocratic.

Green Party values tell us that the needs of our communities - especially our poorest communities - should not be sidestepped or diminished for political expediency or subservience to corporate masters.

We urge everyone to stand with SOCH and the community in continuing the fight to save Braddock Hospital.

The Green Party of Pennsylvania 2010 Nominating Convention will be held Feb 20-21 at the Holiday Inn Monroeville, just east of Pittsburgh. The gathering will feature a Campaign School led by longtime Green Party activist Hugh Esco of Campaign Foundations. In addition, there will be workshops during the day on Saturday, dinner and entertainment on Saturday night, and a business/nomination meeting on Sunday. With new ballot access legislation pending in the Pennsylvania Senate (Voters Choice Act SB 252), the opportunity to have progressive non-corporate candidates on the ballot couldn't be greater.

It's as simple as filling out a voter registration form, checking "Other" and then writing in the word "GREEN" in the party designation section of the form. You can print and then fill out a voter registration form here. If you have a form that already has "Green" as a party designation...simply check the "Green" box. If you are changing your voter registration from a previous party or independent, you should also check the box on the form for "Change of Party".

Your completed voter registration form should be sent to your county election office...addresses are listed on the voter registration form.

Pam Hartwell-Herrero wins her race for Fairfax Town Council, Marin County, CA.
She finished first of seven candidates for three seats with 1,031 votes or 19.76%.

Activists from Pittsburgh, the U.S., and across the globe will converge to protest the destructive policies of the G-20 – meeting in Pittsburgh this September 24-25.

The Group of Twenty (G-20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors represents the world’s economic leaders, intimately connected to the most powerful multi-national corporations that dominate the global economy. Their neo-liberal policies have squandered billions on war, plunged economies into deep recessions, worsened social, economic and political inequality, and polluted the earth.

We believe a better world is possible. We anticipate involvement and support from like-minded people and organizations across the country for projected actions from September 19-25:

People’s Summit – Sept. 19, 21-22 (Saturday,Monday,Tuesday)
A partnership of educators and social justice groups is organizing a People’s Summit to discuss global problems and seek solutions that are informed by the basic principles of genuine democracy and human dignity. WASHINGTON, DC -- Former US Representative and 2008 Green presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney has issued a statement on the seizure of the Free Gaza Movement's 'Spirit of Humanity' relief boat by Israeli gunboats in international waters on Monday.

Ms. McKinney and 18 other members of the 'Free Gaza 21' are currently being held in Givon prison in Ramla, Israel. Two of the Free Gaza 21 have been released.

Cynthia McKinney delivered the following statement by phone:

"We were in international waters on a boat delivering humanitarian aid to people in Gaza when the Israeli Navy ships surrounded us and illegally threatened us, dismantled our navigation equipment, boarded and confiscated the ship. All of us on board were then taken off the ship and into custody, and brought into Israel and imprisoned. Immigration officials in Israel said they did not want to keep us, but we remain imprisoned. State Department and White House officials have not effected our release or taken a strong public stance to condemn the illegal actions of the Israeli Navy of enforcing a blockade of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians of Gaza, a blockade that has been condemned by President Obama."

Green Party Initiates Letter Campaign for PA Bottle Recycling Legislation

Dear Pittsburgh Councilmember,

I am writing to ask that the Pittsburgh City Council pass a resolution in support of Pennsylvania State Senate Bill 588, the proposed bottle recycling deposit legislation currently under consideration by the committee on environmental resources and energy. The bill would provide for a bottle recycling deposit program similar to that of other states, such as New York and Michigan. Passage of this legislation would directly benefit Pittsburgh, the surrounding area, and the entire state of Pennsylvania and it deserves the full political support of City Council.

There are several clear and immediate benefits of such a program. States with deposit programs successfully recycle a greater proportion of beverage containers than states that rely solely on curbside recycling programs. This type of program provides an incentive for residents to engage in local environmental clean up efforts, reducing street trash and helping to preserve our green spaces. It also relieves demands on municipal curbside pick up recycling programs while transferring costs of recycling from taxpayers to manufacturers.

This legislation, if passed, will help to promote Pennsylvania as a leader in environmental responsibility and conservation. We hope that both you and the entire Pittsburgh City Council will lend your support to this effort. Doing so is in the best interest of your constituents and is in keeping with the environmental values of the state of Pennsylvania.

G-20 Convergence Pittsburgh...Sense of the GPOAC Meeting July 2nd

Green Party Regains Minor Party Status in Allegheny County

Based on official results of the
Nov 4th election, the Green Party of Allegheny County has regained minor party status within Allegheny County.

This is how it works:

Titus North, Green Party candidate for Congress (14th District;
all within Allegheny County) received:

23,214 votes (8.71%)

And, the highest winning candidate total for Allegheny:
Jack Wagner (Auditor General) = 442,486 Allegheny Co.votes
442,486 x 5% = 22,124

Titus exceeded 5% of Wagner's Allegheny County total so...

we made it!

Also, our candidates for the PA Legislature had impressive
results:

Mary E (Liz) Hughes (Green, 23rd District): 3948 votes; 13.21%
Liz's percentage is the highest Green Party result in PA for 2008.

Jonah McAllister-Erickson (Green, 21st District): 1891 votes; 7.18 %
Jonah's percentage & votes are an increase from his 2004 results;
significant for this year and the fact that it was a 3-way race.

Congratulations and Thank You to all Green candidates and volunteers in PA!
